Patent Filing Translation

ABC Translations can help with translations for PCT national filings and EP validations.

Translations for European patent applications can be filed at the European Patent Office (EPO) in any language. However, the official languages of the EPO are English, French and German. If the application is not filed in one of these languages, a translation has to be submitted too.

Additionally, once the application has been published, and during the examination process to decide whether a patent can be granted, the applicant must file a translation of the claims in the two official languages other than the language of the proceedings. So a patent application in English will now need to be translated into French and German.

Further, should the patent proprietor require unitary effect for a European Patent, during the transitional period a request for unitary effect must be accompanied by a translation of the European patent as follows:

  • where the language of the proceedings is French or German, a full translation of the specification of the European patent into English; or
  • where the language of the proceedings is English, a full translation of the specification of the European patent into any other official language of the European Union.
